The Gutter Mage

If one were to meet William Moore, it would have been easy to assume that he'd had a hard life. Maybe he'd been born to parents who didn't spend enough time with him, or who resented his very existence. Or maybe had hadn't known his parents and had grown up without their influence. All of those assumptions would have been incorrect however, as he had been born to two wonderful and involved parents. His father, Jonathan Moore, had met his mother, Emily Warner while working as a civil engineer. The two hit it off and it wasn't long after they started dating that their first, and only, child was born. They named him after his grandfather, but took to calling him Liam after the man showed no interest in getting to know the boy and all but disowned his mother for having a child out of wedlock. With an American, no less.

For the first twelve years of his life, things were great. Liam grew up happy and loved by both of his parents. They indulged his interests, especially in magic, playing the part of an amazed audience when he performed little 'shows' for them. But then things changed. The company Jonathan had been working for went under, and he had a hard time finding work. But he soon received a job offer from an old friend in Boston, and it was too good to pass up. It took some work, but eventually he was able to convince Emily to come with him (with the added incentive that they would finally get married once they'd settled in). Liam never took to the idea, but he had little choice but to help pack up his belongings and move to a new country.

It should have been a fresh start for them, but instead turned to tragedy only six months after they settled in Boston. In a scene right out of the pages of a comic book hero's origin story, his parents were run off the road by a drunk driver while returning home from a company Christmas party. Jonathan died at the scene, but Emily languished for nearly two weeks before succumbing to her injuries. With no family in America to claim him (Jonathan's family had all passed away long before he'd traveled to England years before) and no one in the UK willing, Liam ended up being shuffled into the US foster system. He rarely spent more than a few months in any one foster home before being shifted to a new one, packing his meager belongings away into a black garbage bag.

As anyone might have expected, during that time Liam began to act out. While his teachers would agree that he was a smart kid (and he somehow ended up with the grades to show it despite his somewhat spotty attendance), he was either perpetually bored in class or simply enjoyed riling others up. Eventually he turned to petty theft, enjoying the thrill that came with getting away with it. Until he didn't get away with it. At seventeen, he found himself sitting in a Boston police department, waiting for hours for someone to pick him up. When no one came, he was returned to the foster home in a squad car, where it became apparent to the officers that it was not a good situation. So he was shifted again, and again, and again. Until his eighteenth birthday, when he was considered an adult and no longer a concern of the state. For a while, he wandered aimlessly. And in another event straight out of a comic book, stumbled on a circus. He attempted to lift some cash off one of the employees, but was caught. Instead of turning him it, the people in charge of the circus seemed to recognize something in him, something lost. So he ended up with a job instead of another line on his rap sheet. Using his sleight of hand talents, he was tasked with putting on one of the smaller magic shoes to entertain people before the main acts. He spent a year traveling around with the circus before he was tracked down by one of his foster families, who had always been concerned with his future. They offered him college tuition, along with a place to live, and he jumped on the opportunity.

During his years at Boston University, there was a string of thefts, though none of them could ever be tied to him. So while he was still up to his old tricks, he did manage to graduate in four years with a Bachelors. Still, even with his degree, he found it was difficult to find gainful employment. Not only because of his record, but because of his restless nature. Instead of settling down and finding a job, he instead set off across the country. Stopping here and there, working odd jobs. His goal had been to see all 50 states, and after he was hired on a fishing boat headed for Alaska, he managed to cross them all (save for that pesky island, Hawaii) off his list and returned to Boston.

Thus began the cycle of finding and losing jobs (thanks in no part to his flippant attitude with authority). Even so, he managed to build up an impressive variety of skills and could usually find enough work, paid under the table, to keep the bills paid and food on the table. For now, he's found employment with a small 'handyman' company, though he has his own doubts about the legality of their permits. Still, it's enough for him to at least attempt to put down roots in Boston finally. And enough to remove much of the temptation to return to his old way of life. If he can just keep his nose clean, maybe he can really build a life. It's that or he packs up disappears to another random spot on the map again.
john constantine
John Constantine is an occult detective from Liverpool, England. His violent and anti-social attitude makes him a formidable anti-hero, and he's known for doing whatever it takes to get the job done.

John Constantine was born in Liverpool, England. When he was a child, he first began to experiment with magic when somebody told him about a spell that would make him a powerful magician. However, the person didn't tell him that the spell required a sacrifice and, while performing it, his family home caught fire and killed his mother and father.

When he was a young adult, Constantine was a wild, silver-tongued punk with no idea what he was destined to become. Though he always had a knack for being a conman, Constantine had continued to dabble in magic from his childhood, showing interest in anything of the occult but never getting serious enough for it to be anything more than a hobby.
